IMPORTING A USED CAR FROM NI TO ROI?

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

At SERE Motors, we understand the importance of clarity when considering importing a used car into the Republic of Ireland.

Import Criteria:
For import purposes into ROI, a car is considered used if it is over 6 months old and has more than 6,000 kms (3728 miles) on the clock.

VAT CONSIDERATIONS

The VAT status of a used car depends on its registration history, more so now following Brexit.

  • All used cars registered from new in Northern Ireland (NI) are not liable for VAT.
  • Used cars registered in Great Britain (GB) and then re-registered in NI before 1st January 2021 are not liable for VAT (proof of this will be required).
  • All used cars registered in GB are liable for VAT.

VEHICLE REGISTRATION TAX (VRT)

VRT is a tax charged on new and imported used vehicles in Ireland. VRT is charged when an imported vehicle is registered in Ireland, and must be paid within 30 days of the vehicle's arrival. The rate of tax due varies for each vehicle and is determined based on factors such as the vehicle's market value and emissions. Our dedicated sales team is available to assist you in understanding and fulfilling your VRT obligations, ensuring a smooth registration process for your vehicle.

ELECTRIC CARS AND VRT RELIEF

If you're considering purchasing an electric car, you'll be pleased to know about the VRT relief available for eligible vehicles. This incentive aims to make electric vehicles more accessible and affordable, promoting the transition towards sustainable transportation options.

Who’s eligible? Series production passenger cars or commercial vehicles qualify for relief from VRT if they are powered solely by an electric motor and are registered before 31st December 2025. Under this scheme, vehicles with an Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) of up to €40,000 are eligible for relief of up to €5,000. For vehicles with an OMSP between €40,000 and €50,000, the relief amount is reduced. However, it's important to note that relief is no longer available for electric vehicles priced above €50,000.

This initiative encourages the adoption of electric vehicles by providing financial incentives and supports the transition towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation choices.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

You can export all of our vehicles to the Republic of Ireland, offering you a wide range of vehicles to choose from. While all vehicles are available for export, it's worth noting that certain models may incur lower VRT costs, making them a more popular choice for ROI customers. Factors such as the vehicle's origin (registered in Northern Ireland or Great Britain) can also influence the fees paid. Our team is available to provide guidance on selecting the right vehicle for your needs and can offer insights into VRT implications to help you make an informed decision.

VRT is calculated based on the car’s Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) multiplied by a rate that is based on the vehicle’s Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions. An additional Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) levy is calculated and added to the total VRT balance due. To estimate the VRT for the vehicle you are registering, you can use the online calculator here, which provides a convenient and accurate way to assess your obligations before you go ahead with your purchase.

The VRT process involves several steps to ensure compliance with Irish regulations. First, you must book an appointment at a National Car Testing Service (NCTS) centre within 7 days of your vehicle arriving in Ireland. During this appointment, your vehicle will undergo inspection to ensure it meets safety and emissions standards. Following the inspection, registration, as well as payment of VRT and any other applicable tax liabilities, must be completed within 30 days of the date of entry. Our team is available to guide you through each step of the process and ensure a smooth registration experience for your vehicle in Ireland.

VRT is paid upon registration of the vehicle with the Revenue Commission in the Republic of Ireland. Once the vehicle has been registered, the VRT fee is paid at the National Car Testing Service (NCTS) Centre during the registration process in ROI. It's important to note that the amount of VRT payable depends on factors such as the vehicle's market value and emissions. Our team is available to guide you through this process and provide any necessary assistance to ensure a smooth transaction.

To ensure clarity regarding the validity of your vehicle's warranty in the Republic of Ireland, we recommend confirming with your dedicated sales executive. Our sales executives are well-equipped to provide you with detailed information and address any concerns you may have regarding warranty coverage, ensuring peace of mind throughout your ownership experience.

We welcome all vehicles for part exchange, including those registered in the Republic of Ireland.
